On September 24, 2022, the Department of History and Philosophy (DHPh) held its first student orientation for MA History.
The new program has certainly come a long way before finally setting to sail this academic year. The UP Board of Regents approved the institution of the MA History program on July 29, 2021. This was an achievement for the DHPh who have long considered the idea of a history graduate program. Part of the justification for the program was the absence a History graduate program in the Cordillera and Northern Luzon. In line with the UP Baguio and the College of Social Sciences’ visions and missions, the program is designed to train its students on ethnohistory and local history.
    Goals of the Program
MA History Students are expected to graduate with certain competencies. You’re expected to have knowledge and mastery of primary sources. You have to understand the role of multidisciplinarity in history, and to generate as well as communicate historical researches. You’re going to learn ways to integrate history to its public functions. But more importantly, you’re expected to appreciate the many layers of human experiences in history (from ethnic, local, and national histories, to their regional and global scales).
    Orientation Details
The College of Social Sciences opened the first call of enrollees for the program in June, followed by a second call in July, and held the program orientation in September. The orientation covered some general information about the program, such as its courses and structure (which you can see here). Special key speakers presented as well. You have the Graduate Program Office Head Prof. Ana Isabel D. Caguicla who shared some information on scholarships.  Next, the College Secretary Prof. Ma. Cecilia San Luis who shared some on academic policies. Joining the orientation was MA History Program Coordinator Prof. Charita delos Reyes, College Dean Prof. Leah Abayao, and esteemed Professor Maria Nela B. Florendo.
After the orientation, the students and faculty went on a Lakbay Aral (fieldtrip) to sites of interest in the Baguio-Benguet area.
