Program Description

The Master of Management (MM) program seeks to provide qualified students, professionals and practitioners with the theoretical background and skills in management needed in the efficient and effective management of all types of organizations or institutions.

The Master of Management, a non-thesis graduate program, is designed to equip students, professionals and practitioners with holistic and integrated knowledge and skills in management to enable them to assume and implement responsible supervisory and other related positions.

ADMISSION

Stage 1. Basic Admission Requirements

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree/title from a university or from other recognized institutions of higher learning; and
  • Must have at least two (2) years of work experience.
  • Applicants who meet these requirements shall be allowed to take the Graduate Program Admission Test.
  • Credentials to submit before taking the Graduate Program Admission Test:
  • Accomplished Application Form (forms available at the IM Office and online at the GPO page);
  • Transcript of Records, original and one photocopy;
  • Birth Certificate, two photocopies;
  • Reference Report from one supervisor or employer and two from former professors;
  • For working students, an official permit from the employer/supervisor indicating the number of units they are allowed to enroll;
  • For married women, two photocopies of Marriage Contract;
  • For foreign students (non-English), passing the Test for English as a Second Language (TOEFL).
  • Other documents that shall be required to be submitted.

Stage 2. GPAT

Applicants take the Graduate Program Admission Test (GPAT). The test covers logical thinking, basic quantitative skills, and reading proficiency. Applicants who meet cut-off score move on to Stage 3.

Assessment of the General Weighted Average (GWA) vis-à-vis Admission Test and Interview Results. Passing applicants are accepted to the Program.

Note:
  • Minimum proficiency levels in Accounting, Economics, Statistics and Mathematics are required from the applicants. For applicants with deficiencies in these disciplines, bridging courses shall be offered during summer and/or semestral break, or can be taken from other institutions.
  • The student may also enroll in undergraduate courses that provide the proficiency levels expected. The bridging courses are required for the student whose background on the above disciplines is limited as determined through the different stages of the evaluation process.
  • Qualified applicants who do not meet the minimum proficiency levels may be accepted to the Program on a probationary admission status for one year until such time that the requirement is satisfied.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Graduation from the program requires completion of thirty-six (36) units of academic coursework consisting of 27 units of core courses and 9 units of elective courses and passing a Comprehensive Examination thereafter.

Other courses from the MA Social and Development Studies (MASDS) program and other relevant management courses of the UP System can be taken as elective course/s with the consent of the Director of the Institute of Management.

CORE COURSES (27u)

MM 201 (3u). Fundamentals of Management. Basic concepts, theories, and practices of management and the interplay between the external environment (international, economic, politico-legal, socio-cultural, technological, natural/physical) and the internal management of organizations.

MM 202 (3U). Organizational Behavior. Concepts, theories, models, processes, approaches, and practices in describing, understanding, and explaining the dynamics of behavior, interactions, and relationships in organizations.

MM 203 (3u). Managerial Economics. Economic analysis of private, public, and non-profit organizations; includes macroeconomic theory and policy as context for organizational decision-making.

MM 220 (3u). Managerial Accounting and Control. Concepts and principles of financial and management accounting as applied in private and public organizations, with emphasis on the issues of accounting information for managerial and control.

MM 222 (3u). Financial Management. Introduction to finance theory and its application in organizations. Includes the management of short-term and long-term assets; management of sources of short-term and long-term finance; financial analysis and planning and capital structure decisions of organizations. Pre-requisites: MM 203 and MM 220.

MM 230 (3u). Marketing Management. The management of the marketing function as applied to private and public organizations; the nature and dynamics of marketing, the major marketing problems confronting management in adopting to demand conditions, the development of pricing strategies for new and existing products, and the use of marketing research and other activities of marketing management. Pre-requisite: MM 203.

MM 240 (3u). Operations Management. Systematic direction, control and management of the processes that transform inputs finished goods and services; applicable to both profit and non-profit, manufacturing and service organizations, and functional area or industry at the strategic and tactical levels; includes operations management philosophies. Pre-requisite: MM 203.

MM 291.1 (3u). Strategic Management I. Integration of the tool and functional area courses to develop holistic management point of view strategy formulation, implementation, evaluation, and control. Pre-requisite: MM 22, MM 230, and MM 240.

MM 291.2 (3u). Strategic Management II. Appraisal of an organization’s resources, plans, structure and governance, and the assessment of the organization’s macro- and industry/sector environment as basis for strategic action. Pre-requisite: MM 291.1

ELECTIVE COURSES (9u)

MM 250 (3u). Human Resources Management. Management of selection, recruitment, and development of human resource in organization; organization development concepts and uses. Pre-requisite: MM 240.

MM 292 (3u). Policy Making and Program Management. Planning, implementation, and evaluation of policy and development programs/projects as applied in public and private organizations.

MM 293 (3u). Development Management. Concepts, theories, models, approaches, strategies, and practices of development as applied in the micro (organizational) and macro (national) levels of analysis. Cross-listed with SDS 201.

MM 294 (3u). Management of Knowledge and Information Systems. Identification, evaluation, modification, and integration of information flows and technology into the management of knowledge and information systems. Pre-requisite: MM 240.

MM 295 (3u). Seminar in Management.

MM 296 (3u). Enterprise Planning and Development. Establishment, management, and evaluation of any type of organization using the entrepreneurial approach. Pre-requisites: MM 222, MM 230, and MM 240

MM 298 (3u). Special Topics in Management. Pre-requisite: Consent of Instructor. This may be taken for credit twice; student may take a maximum of two different special topics.

MM 299 (3u). Applied Management Research. Supervised undertaking of actual research work using quantitative and/or qualitative methods and designs, focusing on relevant areas in management in actual organizational setting. The nature of work may be model formulation, empirical validation, policy assessment, and other related undertakings.
