2nd SRCSS — 16-17 May, 2024
The Student Research Conference in the Social Sciences (SRCSS) aims to gather undergraduate students at the College of Social Sciences for a two-day conference where the students shall evince their academic progress before their peers and professors. It provides an opportunity for the students to demonstrate their learning outcomes, including improved cognitive and learning skills, knowledge gained, and personal development.
As a grand festival of ideas, this conference aims to help establish a collaborative learning environment where students can exchange ideas, learn from each other, and receive feedback from their peers and professors. In addition, this conference also allows students to reflect on their learning process, evaluate their performance, and address their areas of weakness. This is seen to promote a culture of self-improvement and foster a growth of mindset.
Furthermore, as the College of Social Sciences aims to strengthen its Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences (BASS) program, we believe that organizing this annual students’ conference reinforces our goal of having BASS graduates strengthen their capability at conducting “independent social research” (BASS PLO 4). Likewise, by showcasing their social scientific research projects in a professional conference, our goal is for students to not only develop critical thinking about society (BASS PLO 1) and explain social phenomena using social theory (BASS PLO 3) but also for them to demonstrate ethical Social Science practice (BASS PLO 5). Ultimately, we hope that this conference will provide them with an avenue to nurture their commitment “to lifelong learning in their personal and professional lives” (BASS PLO 6).
Hence, we believe that this conference is an effective way to promote student-centered learning and academic excellence. It also encourages students to become more confident and responsible learners who can take ownership of their learning and achieve their educational objectives.
